Locust Grove Baptist Church
Sermon Series

The Christian calendar starts on the last Sunday of November, and the season in which we begin is called Advent. Advent is a time of waiting, spiritually speaking, for the arrival of our Lord Jesus; into the world, into our hearts, and into the way we live out our lives.

This year, unlike other years, we will follow the traditional church year by using scripture readings that have been adopted by many mainline denominations throughout the world. This schedule of readings, which are used in worship, is simply called the “Lectionary.” You will notice that God’s Word will be read more often in our worship gatherings and the themes that come forth from these readings will provide the foundation for the themes in our sermons and overall worship.

We are excited to take something as old as the Liturgy, and contextualize it for our use here at Locust Grove. The worship themes and seasons of the Christian calendar will match those of many of our Christian brothers and sisters across the globe. One other benefit from using the Lectionary is that you can look up the scriptures for any given date in the coming year, and know that in the worship services, we will be “fleshing out” those same verses. In other words, you can come to worship biblically prepared.

This years’ schedule is drawn from the Revised Common Lectionary, which is organized into a three year rotating schedule. We are in year B. The Lectionary can be found easily on the Internet, where the schedule of scripture readings is listed for the entire year.
